Is it normal to think gender roles should be abolished in our society?

Society should promote being individuals, not fitting in a mold of either: being strong, brave, & hard-working (males) or caring, patient, and motherly (females). Gender roles are harmful and only put unneeded stress on everyone involved. Girls shouldn't have it ingrained to them to become mothers and wives with baby dolls/cooking toys and boys shouldn't be forced into being masculine early with car, sport, or G.I. Joe toys. Children being associated to certain colors should be abolished too. This is a response to another IiNer's post.

If a girl should grow up to get married and have kids while a boy wants to be a very manly man, it should be their choice, not a learned behavior/societal pressure.

I have hired women for jobs in the marine industry (deck hands and engineers) that caused huge battles with my employers, because I don't believe in gender roles, in some cases.
But, as I've said before, there are SOME professions where most women just do not have the physical strength to do the job, in some circumstances. These include firefighter, logger and police officer, just to name a few.
It's ridiculous to send a woman into a burning building who just plain doesn't have the physical strength to carry a fellow firefighter out of that burning building should he become incapacitated.
Abolishing all gender roles just doesn't make sense. Nothing is ever that cut and dry.

''Nothing is ever that cut and dry. '' yet you establish that ALL women are not suited for physical jobs because they are weak. there are plenty of women physical enough for those jobs and to carry someone out out a burning building (your example was pretty stupid and one dimensional btw)

But it a realistic example, to make my point. Would you put your life in the hands of a woman just because it is politically correct that she be there? There is often a double standard of physical fitness just so women CAN qualify for some jobs, including the military, just for the sake of PC.
However, I do think you have a serious problem with reading comprehension, because if you reread my reply it states, "most women", not "all women", but you either chose to ignore that or can't understand it.

You are a fake bitch who needs to be liked by everyone to validate yourself because you have very low self esteem.

  • Maybe these gender roles were put in place due to observations of how men and women have worked most throughout history?

I'm not going to say I support gender roles because I don't but I don't like this idea that gender roles were forced on to men and women rather than men and women representing gender roles how we've known them, generally throughout history before technology advanced as much as it did.

I do believe that society isn't trying to force gender roles anymore. Women can work, play sports, go on an all night booze cruise or whatever. Nobody is forcing them to become mothers. Some may expect it but expectations are just assumptions based on how most people within the same group live. Same goes for the guys.

I think this whole argument can be the same as the whole "does art imitate life or does life imitate art" argument thing. I don't think that boys, girls, women, men were randomly shown these toys and had it ingrained for them to like them, I think they both liked these things which resulted in toy companies noticing that males and females generally like different things and so they aimed their product to the groups more likely to buy them.

Basically, what I'm saying is that I agree with you completely in terms of gender roles not being good if enforced, but I don't agree that these things have been enforced. You know? :)

No, why? No one is being forced to followed gender roles. It's a choice. It's a choice to be a manly Man or feminine man. Or the same for women. You don't follow gender roles therefore you believe it should be abolished? And what if the girl actually wants a doll? Are you going to tell her "no! You're accepting gender roles!" I think you should fix on yourself. No offense.

        • No. I just think that people shouldn't turn to gender roles to determine how people will grow up.
