Is it normal to think 'common sense' is overrated?
I think people give way too much credit to 'common sense'. I think that many things in the world run contrary to 'common sense' understanding, such as some theorems in probability and statistics, quantum mechanics, economics (people REALLY try to invoke 'common sense' ideas here), politics (and ESPECIALLY here), and so forth. Yesterday, it might have been common sense that the devil makes you sneeze and that one could determine the age of the earth by counting the number of 'begats' in the Bible. Nowadays, many people might not think that's the case. Personally, I think that common sense in some ways might hamper one's understanding of more difficult concepts and while I can understand it being useful to understand more mundane things, I really hate how people try to drag it into more esoteric topics. I don't see what's so good about 'common sense'.
