Is it normal to tell people to shut up or stop for some reason?

I have this person in my class that if I am talking to a friend, he'll turn around and give me a nasty face and say "Just shut up".
I'll say a joke to a friend or randomly because I remember it, and of course, it's funny and he'll respond with "Oh my god just shut up."
I once tied my shoe and he looked behind and like every time, gave me the nasty "Smells like fish/I don't like your face" look and said "Every time I turn around it's your ugly face, it's you, just go."
And of course he tells me this, to shut up, my ugly face, and more.
Now, I have not had any physical fights with him, nor verbally, I have not affected him, I just sit behind him in class and have not done anything to him.

    Wait are you female? If you're female he may think exactly the opposite of what he is communicating. I only say this because I'm 35 and this is how I approach women. Just kidding.

    sounds like a typical bully , don't feel bad because although it sounds like just something your mom would throw at you ... these people are sad inside . He is on the losing side , not you . I wouldn't tolerate it but if you can ignore him , please do . It sometimes works to kill someone with kindness also .

        I love to kill my enemies animosity with kindness . There is something so powerful about it as it takes a certain person to put all the emotions aside and follow through .

      Well the only time I talk or say jokes is at appropriate times in class. I don't like to distract in class. I also would say the joke quietly. I asked him once and he shrugged. Hilarious

    I've had that as a kid. I told the bastard that if he wants me to shut up. He can make me shut up, or get away from me.
    Needless to say, he didn't do anything. Typical loser that hates on people, cause of his own insecurity.

    I hate bullies. Best way to deal with one. Beat him up and bully him for a week. See how he likes that.

    Bully. Inside he is full of hate.... likely comes from a family that ignores him or hates him and he is not strong enough to see beyond that.

    I wouldn't even flinch, he deserves to be out casted or he will never learn how to behave.
