Is it normal to tell a friend it was his fault for giving without being asked?

As all friendships go, there are the occasional disagreements and arguments where open discussion usually solves the problem and strengthens the friendship.

I had an tiff with a friend about his new habit of standing me and our friends up without warning, really just a politeness thing. Instead of discussing that, he suddenly burst out that if I thought I was giving too much, I could stop giving and that he never asked me to give in the first place. So, it was my fault for giving without his asking! I never kept track of who gives or who takes more because it is not an issue for me.

Is it normal? What is he actually saying? Anyone experienced similar reaction before?

To me it sounded like he was feeling guilty that you are doing all the giving. Hes hiding something maybe, this is just what I read out of it. Do you think maybe he feel he doesnt deserve to be your friend? Are you a saint?

    Then... quit giving?

Obviously he does not want to participate in your social outings. I know people like that, that will be your friend but don't like going out and doing things. Just don't invite him anywhere. If he wants to do something, just wait for him to tell you.
What he is telling you right now is that he didn't ask for anything you're doing for him... so don't do it and if you do without him asking and he doesn't go along with it, then don't get pissy because he didn't ask.
