Is it normal to see everything as a symbol or a metaphor?

I dont think like normal people do. I tend to turn everything into a metaphor and I see people as something other than they are. I tend to have symbols for people who stick out to me. Like if someone is extremely kind hearted and giving they would be categorized as an angel. Its the same with how I see myself but I realize I have always been like this. When I think about it metaphors and symbols are just so much easier to use to describe people than telling them how much you care about them.

I do this too. Sometimes it's a simple archetype, like an angel, but that's usually with people I don't know well - like the hospital room service staff who happens to have a fitting anecdote or a mysterious store clerk who somehow knows you need a hug..

But with people I know well, like certain family members, it becomes more ccomplex. I have an aunt, for example, who represents to me obsession, dissociation, affinity toward death,etc.. - basically the extremes of my own personality, and she's there like a shadow looking over me of what I could become. That said, I still love the lady and think of her mostly as just my aunt :P

    • That is called projecting. You are giving her your qualities not any qualities she already has.

You clearly don't know my aunt, haha.

        • You just said you are basing this perception on qualities you have. Which is projection.

I am aware of what projection is, I also took intro to psychology in high school. Noticing similar qualities in a person separate from oneself is not always projection. If I were to assign these qualities to her with no basis other than that's how I feel, that would be different, but these are things I have observed my entire life.

Not the best plan; metaphors are, by definition, less accurate than truth.

Metaphors can convey an infinite possibility of truths. To understand a metaphor it's best to analyze it from multiple perspectives. If OP's metaphors are stationary, he/she risks idealization or perhaps stereotypical thinking. But if OP is able to recognize the ambiguity of what the persons might represent, as well as the probability that there is nothing particularly magnificent or damning about the individual at all and that is just how they appear under certain circumstances, I think this type of thinking could be considered a healthy exercise for a creative mind.

    • Not really. A metaphor is the truth told in a different way.

        No, it's a truth told in a dressed-up manner.
