Is it normal to say this when asked how many friends you have?

Why would someone's reply to the question of how many friends he has be the following: "I don't have many friends but I do have some."
What type of person do you think someone who said this would be?

It's a rdidculous question. My response to it would be: "Define 'friend' first".

As for the reply you've mentioned - "I don't have many friends but I do have some." - I think it is very neutral, it doesn't say anything about the person. Seems like this person didn't want to open up.

That's an extremely personal question. Just be glad that he gave you an answer. He has a small number of friends not a lot.

    • He actually asked me first how many friends I have. That was the only reason why I asked him how many friends he has. Usually, I don't ask people this question since, like you said, it's extremely personal.

What difference does it make how someone responds to this sort of personal question?
