Is it normal to say "might could"?

I just noticed I say "might could", as in, "you might could get a discount if you ask". I suppose it's a nonsensical substitute for "possibly could". Anyway I'm not sure if I have ever heard anyone else say it that way. I don't know if I made it up or picked it up somewhere.

I had a dear friend in college from Olla, Louisiana who used to say it all the time.

It makes absolutely no grammatical sense. You may have picked it up from a kid? Idk, maybe it's not very noticeable in your speech, but chances are it makes you sound a bit stupid.

    • I'm hardly ever around kids so I doubt that's where it came from. I realize it makes no sense and it might make me look stupid. I'm not terribly worried about that though. Just wondering if it's a normal saying, probably would be a regional one if it is normal at all, but I can't recall ever hearing it and I just noticed myself saying it within the past 6 months or so.

I wouldn't even notice if you said that. It's very common in the southern U.S. it's called "modal stacking" and though it's not standard English I think your use of it is fine in the company of fellow southerners. However, you might could keep this in mind while traveling.

    • Thanks! I must have picked it up subconciously. It's weird how I can't recall hearing anyone say it but obviously I must have.
