Is it normal to say "i am not white" online?

I met 3 people like this lately. Halfway in the conversation they say i am not white? Sometimes even sayin sorry. Back in my days irc and yahoo chat no one was like this people were proud whatever race the were so what happened?

I don't know, maybe third world countries finally got the internet.

It was probably for clarification. You meet a stranger online... what race do you think he/she is?

White. Yeah. It's just an automatic assumption that most people have so those people were probably clearing any misconception.

But as to if it was normal or not - that depends on the context.

It's probably for the same reason that the word 'racism' is mainly tied to discrimination of dark skinned individuals.
And it's still quite rampant even today, particularly on the internet where douchebags can remain anonymous.

maybe because white people are so full of themselves they think they are the only ones with internet and laptops and that everyone on the internet is white.

Describing yourself in an internet chat seems pretty normal to me. The wording is a matter of context which I am not aware of.

I'm confused. I don't see the problem with this.
