Is it normal to say "a flood of people went through the door."
When I used to describe a lot of people I say flood of people and people think its kinda weird.

Not weird at all. It would be like saying, "A crowd of people flooded the doorway." or "The doorway was flooded with people.".
Well, I guess it does sound a little strange when I read it over and over again. Uh.. nah. Its fine. Don't sweat it. It sounds alright.
I suspect that when you were young you misheard the word 'crowd' of people and thought it was flood. It's not a very nice metaphor as it reminds me of the tsunami and people getting washed away.
