Is it normal to refuse jury duty?

How many of you just refuse for whatever reason?
I think its ridiculous that were forced to even be submitted to the process.

I made a post about this a while back and the majority disagreed with me so I know people probably will now too but I agree.

I hated the idea when I was called, I was smoking regularly which had made social anxiety pretty bad, the main thing people on the post said is that even if you don't want to go its about doing your part for the community, but I hate my community, in fact I'd had a knife turned on me and 60quid stolen a few weeks before so I wasn't exactly feeling a strong sense of duty to my community either.

Once I actually got away from the bustling main area and into the courtroom though I enjoyed it, it was interesting but the main reason I wouldn't want to do it or ever do it again is because jurors don't give a shit.

I listened, paid attention, took notes and discussed but half the people I was with daydreamed for hours and agreed with and said whatever would get them home the quickest, is that how we want the legal system to work?

And it wasn't just my group I'd walk into the main area and hear people ask what had happened because they'd not paid attention and it would be met with a shrug.

Maybe it's just my area but hardly anyone actually considered evidence and actually paid attention, it was infuriating and just shows it's a deeply flawed system

I served mine just to get it out of the way, but I know a ton of people that concoct all sorts of dumb reasons so they don't have to go. I don't think they scrutinize the reason very much so it's easy to get approved.

But you're gonna have to keep dealing with this every couple of months because if you don't serve they don't take you off the list so you'll keep getting picked.

You never get taken off the list in the uk, you can refuse if you're asked again within two years but after that you have to go, one of the people I was with had done it three times

I'm surprised such an opinionated group of people hate the opportunity to make their opinion mean something. Well, who am I kidding. Here you only have to think for two minutes before you respond.
It's pretty whiny and lazy to try to get out of something that usually takes a day every year or two. Talk about First World Problems.

I can understand the annoyance, but I also realize that it's my only chance to directly take some control over our horribly broken justice system. And if I'm ever accused of something I'd want a jury trial, so it's only fair that I do the same for others.

What's so fucking special about you, that you feel you should be exempt from your civic duty? What would happen if everybody in your country acted just like a spoiled baby, the way you are? Get off your lazy ass and do your civic duty!

Easy for you to say, you seafaring lout. Out there in international waters, due process is an AK47 assault rifle.

I once got called in to get interviewed for jury duty, I dressed with my clothes inside out and smeared lipstick on my face...I also mumbled to myself and pretended to have Tourettes tics and yelled "potato salad!" at random times.
    I didn't get chosen.

I was reading research journals and making very focused eye contact with the attorneys. The prosecutors scratched me everytime.

I would refuse if I was chosen. I don't think that it is my role. There's a God for that.

I don't like the idea of a life being in my hands. I am not perfect no one is I don't believe I should have the power to judge a man and potentially ruin his or her life.

I found out at an early age that they get ahold of your name for jury duty when you register to vote. Thats partly why Ive never voted or even registered to vote. I have never been called on for jury duty. In case anyone is interested, the other reason I dont vote is because I believe that all politicians, no matter how good theit intentions are, end up becoming corrupt.
