Is it normal to purposefully seek challenges to my ideas?

Politically, I'm sort of on the far-left, but I sometimes purposefully read books and periodicals written by people on the right (both the nutty, unhinged wingnut types, and the more eloquent, cultured conservatives) just so I can get used to having my ideas challenged. Whenever my ideas are challenged, I tend to get this mildly stressed feeling, and I think that force-feeding myself conservative media from time to time will get me used to it. IIN?

    • Thanks for being fair, balanced, and nonjudgmental in your assessment. Also, when did I ever say that I was "smart?" I'm really glad that your nonexistent reading-comprehension allows you to read things into my statements that I'm not actually saying. Clearly, your father and uncle aren't one and the same or anything.

leadin off with 'fair & balanced' is hardly the hallmark of a deep thinker

Good for you. I do the same thing, and try to formulate counter arguments to positions that I disagree with. Some of my arguments are bad. Some of the opposition ideas are good. This is the basis for constructive political compromise.

BTW, I wish more liberals understood macroeconomics.

Normal, probably not. But it's always intelligent to do enough research so that you understand all sides of an issue, and not blindly follow the herd.
    Good on ya!

You should challenge your beliefs sometime but not the point where it makes you sick.
