Is it normal to not wear shorts/a nightie to bed unless my legs are smooth?

I'm currently sorting through my nightwear. I own a mix of pyjama sets with trousers/shorts and nighties and a teddy.

It's only ever mum and me in the house, so I could walk around hairy if I so wished. However, I don't think I'd feel right doing so unless my legs were mostly covered. And I'd never dream of having them hairy in public unless they were covered.

I'm asking this because I've found myself overheating in bed (?!) and want to try wearing stuff before I get rid of it.

CW: Leg hair, talk of bodies and grooming, gendered behaviour and language. Maybe a microaggression.

So I go downstairs. Mum and I are talking about stuff and we both agree the top half of the teddy I am wearing is too big for me. She then comments that she thought my hips were bigger than my shoulders "but that I'm pretty much in proportion".
She clearly meant I was the same on the top and bottom.
The top half is too big and low on my shoulders but nicely close-fitting in the bottom half. However, I had trousers on over the bottom so she couldn't see that.

She then showed off how much the hair on her arms has reduced through a laser machine she bought herself and has been using for a year. She was clearly very happy with that. She then went into a very gendered schpiel about how usually her arms are "like mens' hairy arms", like a forest etc etc and suggested that I could get one as a Christmas present from dad.
She found a new model in a supermarket today with twice as many zaps as hers and said I could use it on my legs.
    ....

    Now.
IF I did decide to get one, I would use it on my legs and pubes because the hair there grows so much more quickly than hair elsewhere. I can't use my epilator on my legs as it's so much more painful than anywhere else and a much bigger area than anywhere else (I can epilate my underarms, feet, toes, between my eyes and face just fine).
Waxing costs too much for me to be able to do it on a regular basis (and this machine is about the price of 1 round of Hollywood, full legs and underarms. Maybe full arm too if I'm lucky).
Cream is what I currently use but I have to leave it on longer than the instructions say and the hair grows back very quickly even then.
I unintentionally grew it out for for about 2-3 months at the end of last year and that's the absolute maximum I can tolerate it before it starts seriously irritating me. Also, it's too thick, dark and coarse to look good as it grows out against my pale skin.

Shaving is an absolute no-go for me because - despite people "myth busting" the "idea" that hair grows back thicker and darker, mine does and my skin does not like it.
I'm pretty sure I'm hairier than a lot of men I know. I always have had dark thick hair that grows back quickly and the same goes for mum.

I'm also loathe to try the laser as you allegedly have to shave beforehand to prep the machine so it can get as close to the roots as possible.
I'm pretty sure Vert could do the same job as it doesn't take hair out from the roots.

Has anyone here tried either laser sessions or an at-home laser machine on hair? If so, what have been your experiences?

I haven't shaved or waxed my lower legs since 2005, laser is a damn good investment!

    • Lucky. I've had thick, dark, fast-growing body hair for as long as I can remember and so has my mum.

I can't afford a course of laser sessions from a professional. I can barely afford a Hollywood+full leg+underarm wax more than once or twice a year.

I currently use cream as it's cheap and lasts longer than shaving... But I have to leave it on longer than the instructions say.
Can't epilate my legs or pubes as it hurts too much even with more painkillers than recommended (But I can epilate my feet, toes, underarms, upper lip and between my eyes just fine).
Shaving makes my body hair grow back darker and thicker, despite the "myth busting" saying that it doesn't.
I can't let it grow more than two or three months or else it drives me nuts as it makes my legs itch, and it's too thick, coarse and dark to look good for the "hairy woman" political movement. Not to mention that my pits and bits start stinking however much I try and keep them clean.

Mum and I had a conversation to do with hair removal earlier which I found quite difficult. I posted about it in a Facebook group and will copy-paste it here when I can bear to.
