Is it normal to not want to give money to a family member i don't know

My mom asked me to give some money to my uncle who is apparently very sick, but I don't even know who he is. I don't know exactly how close he is to my family or who he is related to, but I don't personally know him. Am I just selfish?

Why doesn't your mom give him money...?

I'd at least be asking "Who is he anyway?" before I parted with $50 for someone I don't know. If you wanted to give it, would that be an amount you could spare?

I think the fact that your mom asked you should have some meaning to you here. This man must mean something to her. Her brother, apparently. So out of respect for your mother I'd say help the guy out. Who gives a fuck whether you know the guy? Just realize that you may get the money back or you may not. Can you spare the money? If you can't then I guess your long lost Unc is shit out of luck. Nothing to feel guilty about in my view. Not my dough so this is a easy one to call. But I'd think of your mom, and let those thoughts guide your decision.

Personally - I don't value "family" very highly. I have a sister who I'd help out if I could - because we are close and she would do the same for me. As for the rest... The wouldn't do shit for me, so I won't do shit for them. Simple really.

On the other hand I have a life-long friend who I'd give my last dollar, and borrow more besides to help if he asked, because he has basically done the same for me on a couple of occasions over the years.

OP said it was to be given, so that's not a loan

$50 isn't much? It would be for some people and especially for someone OP doesn't know and it would help if OP's not the only family member contributing

No, if I can't see people in front of me, I barely believe they exist, let alone give money to them

The quickest way to lose a friend is to loan them money.
