Is it normal to not understand this insult?

It's thrown around all the time on this site.

"You live in your mom's basement."

My lack of understanding is threefold.

Firstly, why is it always the mom's basement? Would it be acceptable if it was dad's? Or mom AND dad's?

Secondly, why is it always a basement? Maybe the person lives in a room on the ground. Are they of higher social standing than someone who lives in a basement? Is a second floor dweller superior to all?

Lastly, in this day and age where it is increasingly difficult for people to be financially independent, isn't it SENSIBLE for young adults to stay at home until they can work a few years and save for a dwelling of their own?

    Yes : )

It's unfortunate that a post itself cannot be thumbed up. There are quite a few insults thrown around in is it normal land that baffle me.

    You are a feminist!!!!

    You fucking social justice warrior!!!

    Liberal cunt!!!

    Vegetarian!!!!

You probably don't own a car!!!! Your virginity is shameful, and for fucks sake, you can't be religious but you also can't be liberal!!! You must fall dead centre on the spectrum, and fuck your face for advocating!!! In fact, don't have a point of view period!!! You retard!!!

    • Never really heard feminist used as an insult by itself honestly, it's usually mixed with "scum" or just "feminazi" lol.

As for social justice warrior, I think that's used to be ironic, from my understanding of it anyway. I don't think it's supposed to be taken literally. :3

Answer to question 1: It would make no difference. It is sometimes phrased parents basement. The meaning is the same.

Answer to question 2: The basement is a common place to have an apartment set up within a home. You could also say garage or attac. The meaning is again the same.

Answer to question 3: It is not considered a lofty goal to live in your parents house forever. If the person in question is 22, it is not much of an insult. If the person is 32 or 42 it becomes more effective.

The overall answer to your question is the insult is intended to suggest the person is a loser. As stated in answer 3, the persons age is relevant to the effectiveness.

    • I see you took me literally. I should have anticipated as such.

I would assume a basement (though of course, I'VE never been in one), might be equated to a cave, and therefor a rather Neanderthal existence.

I think it'd be pretty sweet to live in a basement, there being no basements in the town where I was born (there lived a man, who sailed the sea, and he told us of his life, on a yellow submarine).
