Is it normal to not like eating in front of others?

Though I genuinely like the feeling of enjoying a solitary meal, I don't like eating in front of people most of the time. I fear that I'll make a mess, that I will take to long, or that I'm actually unworthy of eating in front of others, much less eating at all, and everyone thinks so. If I do have to eat in front of others, I order something small and not particularly enjoyable so that I don't feel like I'm eating above my worth.

    I love duplicate posts.

I'm okay with eating in front of my mom, but other than her, no. It makes me so self-conscious. I don't enjoyed being watched while I am eating and I certainly don't enjoy hearing people's comments about my diet/eating habits.

I feel like this, but it's more to do with being embarrassed about the pleasure
    I'm getting from eating.

I don't eat in front of people either. It's one of my social phobia symptoms.

I find a lot of women have this...its probably because youre too conscious of manners or decorum. Just make a big old mess with some ribs or pizza and you will have fun and get over it.

I like eating, and I get nervous in front of others, and usually end up making a mess or whatever, just don't go for spaghetti!

It's because some people are really self conscious or paranoid.

When I was little, whenever I was at a family reunion or party I always felt awkward eating in front of people.

Some of my relatives were pretty open about calling me big or fat even though I was actually at a healthy weight. Under those conditions, you can't really blame some people for being embarrassed.

My ex-girlfriend had the same problem when we first started dating. She had a really hard time eating infront of me. Eventually I got her to relax and enjoy eating infront of me. I had to give her a lot of encouragement, but that was fine because I loved her.

I've never ate in public before, but I hope I don't have an irrational fear about when I do...someday...
