Is it normal to not feel anything after watching someone die?

Today I watched a lady die in a Wal-Mart. Stayed there the entire time watching, which was about 30 minutes. Got to watch her stop breathing, turn purple, and fall to the floor. Her daughter was crying and screaming the whole time.

It was actually really exciting to watch, and I couldn't get myself to leave. As she laid on the floor gasping, I found myself hoping she would die just so I could say I've seen someone die.

You seem proud of your lack of empathy. I feel sorry for you.

Hm. Maybe you're right. Why do you feel sorry for me?

Because empathy makes you human. It's essential to connecting with other people. You didn't feel bad that a daughter lost her mom? Does that mean that you don't feel connected to your own family? How do you maintain true friendships with others if you don't share in happiness or pain? And doesn't seeing someone die make you scared, afraid of your own death and determined to make your own life better?

If you are experiencing that type of apathy, you probably aren't experiencing life. Do you care about those close to you, even if you don't care about strangers?

I'm being presumptuous here, but just in case- apathy can be a symptom of depression. It doesn't always manifest itself as sadness. An overall lack of feelings and compassion isn't normal.

You're completely right, actually. I don't have any true friendships, and I don't care about or feel connected to my family. Life isn't that fun for me. Maybe it is depression like you said, but I just don't know. I've been trying to figure it out and I'm getting nowhere.

Also, thank you for taking the time to write all that out.

            You're very welcome : )

And for the record, I don't think you're a bad person. I think everyone goes through phases in life where they are too involved with their own problems to afford concern to others, but feeling nothing might be indicative of something more.

I think "depression" is a misnomer because it doesn't always mean "feeling down." It just means that you have a chemical imbalance that keeps you from experiencing normal feelings of reward and satisfaction, and sometimes empathy or even real sorrow. It doesn't necessarily manifest itself as "feeling sad," sometimes it's more of a lack of feeling joy or motivation or connection with others. It can feel like nothingness.

I'm not a doctor, but it might be worth looking into.

I genuinely hope things get better for you, even if you aren't depressed. Everyone deserves to experience real friendships and connections. In the mean time, I'm around here from time to time if you need someone to talk to.

            Good luck.

It sounds like you felt something... The Internet is a wonderous place, you can watch people die in all sorts of ways. Never seen anyone die in real life myself.
