Is it normal to not be able to tell the difference between a dream and reality?

So is it? If not does it every happen to you? At times I have very real dreams that when I wake up I can't tell if its a memory or a dream or if it ever happen. Its every freaky and at times I really have to sort out my thoughts when dreaming a dream that seems so real. I got stuck once from dreaming a dream so real that I had scream myself awake just to get out.

I have such vivid memories which I'm not sure if they're dreams or reality. Some are obvious, like I know for sure I wasn't a fireman back in 2007, but others like conversations and days out with family are indistinguishable between reality and fiction.

Many people have certain dreams called Lucid Dreams. This is when you are aware of the fact that you are dreaming. During a dream (or reality) do reality tests if you are not sure at the moment. These could be leaning against a wall to see if you fall, trying to push your thumb through your palm, and trying to breath in through your nose while it is plugged. If you can't do these, you probably aren't dreaming. If you can, then you can "take control" of your dream, in a manner of speaking. To do this just know that you are dreaming, then do whatever you want. You can fly and shit. If you can't tell if you are dreaming or awake, just perform reality tests. They are very easy and quick and you can almost be certain of whether or not you are dreaming. Here are some more tests: throw something in the air and try to catch it, read something again and again and it will change, try to fly, look in a mirror, and look at your surroundings asking yourself "is this normal?"
And by the way... you may want to talk to a doctor...

If, after dreaming you are able to reason that it was in fact a dream even if it felt real, then it is normal. A lot of people experience this.

If you find that you cannot separate your dreams from your waking hours for long periods of time. (Hours, a day, several days), and it becomes a reoccurring problem, you need to see a doctor or a psychiatrist. (or both) It could be a psychosis or schizophrenia, and you'd need pills because it would mean something was wrong with your brain chemistry. It doesn't, however, sound like this is a problem for you. :)
