Is it normal to mute the television when the advertisements are showing?

In my opinion it is so annoying that the advertisements are extra loud. Especially late in the evening when I have turned up the sound because of the quiet conversation in a lot of films/television, and then the advertisements scare me because the volume is that violent.

Anybody else experiencing this?

I live in Norway, but this happens when I am at home with my family in England too.

A TV programme has a mix of audio levels. There are loud parts and soft parts. Nuance is used to build the dramatic effect.

Most advertisers don’t want nuance. They want to grab your attention. To do that, the audio track is electronically processed to make every part of it as loud as possible.

Come on, Jill. Come into the freezer so I can put my polar spunk in your hair. Come on, come get it. Let me whazz off my hairy albino bear cock on you, Jill.

I'm retracting the bear foreskin and the beast is out of the cage! Eat it, Jill. Eat it! No fish fingers for you, Jill. Eat my arctic roll. Eat it!

      EAT IT!

Same here in USA. I keep volume low all the time with subtitles on.

Hey, these commercials are terrible. Do what is necessary to tune them out. They are not worth your time in most cases.

There are actually TV sets out there that one can buy that automatically turn the volume down for the commercials, so it's my guess, you aren't alone.
Of course, if you get an English/Norwegian dictionary and look up "mute" and "button" you might find an easier and cheaper way to solve your problem, right there on your remote.

What I find remarkable is that this aggressive use of volume is considered effective enough to inflict on viewers. If most of us are muting it, then surely they should just stop? It is costing them money to produce and pay for advertising and by using such aggressive tactics we are actually blocking them out more than we would have done otherwise.

    Stupid illogical marketing.
