Is it normal to move out but stay in the relationship?

My fiance and I met in a commune of sorts over a year ago, and although we had separate rooms, we've basically lived together since day one. I want to move out, but stay together, and I've never known a couple who has attempted this.

He'll probably take it as a prelude to a break-up, but I really just want to give us a chance to sort things out, which we didn't really have since we moved so fast together.
