Is it normal to make up stories to keep people interested in you?

sometimes when i talk to people, even close friends or family memebers, i often exaggerate a LOT and make up stories on the spot too, just to keep the conversation going or to make the other person interested in me or to make them like me more. IIN?

There is no reason you can't create a special character at IIN that espouses bullshit wherever he goes. You would provide our community with amusement, and have the satisfaction of amazing everyone one with your tall tales.

90% of people on this site are like that. 'I want to f**k my mother', etc. ad nauseam.

Or they could mostly just be people with very different traits and tendencies who are genuinely curious as to whether these behaviors are normal. why else would you come to this site? Of course 90% of the people on a site called "is it normal" are going to be asking questions normal people find absurd.

If that's the case, then we could reasonably expect a greater variety of voices from the margins. That said, I suspect there's a problem with the approval of posts, and that only a narrow range of topics get approved, which contributes to the monotony of the site.

Even if that is the case, exaggerating truths is exactly what they are describing in their story. Its a pretty legit post anyway you look at it.

Instead of wasting your time doing that, do interesting stuffs so that you don't have to lie about them and when you are telling other people them you can tell them confidently that that was the truth...

You are just a good story teller and you feed off of people's attention. You mightvwant to look inside yourself though and ask yourself why you are afraid to tell the truth.

Unfortunately, the editing feature times out. It should be "on." "Off of" is always informal but acceptable for certain use. Regardless, it was used wrong here. I regret any pain and suffering this may have caused.

This is normal, but it's not a good thing to do. People will begin to not trust you when they find out the stories you've been telling them are bullshit.

How old are you? I used to do that as a teenager but making up so much stuff got very complicated and anyway, most people can tell you're bullshitting.

You'll probably grow out of it, I did.

I used to work with someone like you, and when it became clear what a phoney liar she was we would all just ignore her. That's what you deserve, you deserve to be ignored.

DO you know you are lying/exaggerating when you tell the stories? Or do you believe the stories when you tell them and realize later they are false/mostly false?

no no, i obv know im lying. it just happens impulsively. i see the person disinterested and i spin my lies. when i notice it i stop myself. i just want the impulsive habit to go away too.

Thats a good sign actually. if this is the case then I'm guessing that you are simply a lying addict and not a pathological liar (They sometimes don't realize they are lying until later). Something you could try is to backtrack as soon as you catch yourself. depending on what you just said, sometimes it easy to simply say something like: "haha well obviously i'm exaggerating, but you get the idea right?" or "Okay i'm obviously kidding, but it would have been great/shitty if it actually happened like that."
I would say its better to tackle this now because its gunna be hard to do damage control if people start noticing.
        I wish you luck.
