Is it normal to lose your accent completely?

My friend moved to Scotland three years ago. She was born and raised in the United States. But just recently, her third year living in Scotland, she comes and visits me and she has a full Scottish accent. I mean I heard her sound Scottish a bit during the second year too but this is crazy.

So when we went to dinner, people were asking her where she was from and she said she's American and they all laughed. They didn't believe her and she even told them she moved to Scotland and has been there three years but picked up the accent.

I honestly don't believe this to be true. Is this normal or is she trying too hard to be Scottish? She always loved Scotland because her great grandparents are apparently from there and she has a Scottish name.

Is this really normal to fully sound Scottish especially after just 3 yrs?

Absolutely. In fact the younger you are the faster you will phase into a new accent. And if nearly all the people she ever interacted with were Scottish, tbat would help too.

This doesn't hold true for every person though. Some people may not catch a new accent at all or maybe just a bit. I would say she may have assimilated even faster because of her fondness for Scotland.

    • Well she's not a teen or a child and is older than me as she's 24. The people she works with aren't Scottish either. Well, the main person is but her coworkers aren't Scottish so it's puzzling but maybe it was for her fondness of Scotland. It just seemed so fast. My grandma is Irish and still has about 80% Irish accent even though she came here like 40 years ago lol. So ya, just found it unusual I suppose!

24 is still not too old, but old enough to make it unusual I agree. Some people just have a knack for picking up accents quickly, even from watching movies/tv shows! Send her to Germany next and see what she comes back with ;)

Has she lost her American accent completely though? Even if she tried?

I think its normal if your in the evinorement long enough, however its a little more difficult to get rid of a speech impediment.
