Is it normal to look ugly in the mirrors in public areas?

When I am at home and look in the mirror, I don't think I look bad. I actually think I look good in my mirrors at home. In my mirrors at home, I usually use soft white light bulbs. However, when I go to any public mirror and I want to immediately cry at how ugly I look or go home quickly and lock myself inside my room for the rest of my life so that no one has to see how ugly I look. For instance, today I just went to Target and couldn't believe how ugly/bad I looked. All this time I thought I was pretty when I might actually be ugly. Is there any way to know if I look pretty or ugly to other people?

The lighting in public spaces like Target is generally pretty harsh and chosen by owners who want to keep running costs as low as possible. It's not designed to make customers look flattering.

I wonder how you look in the mirrors in places where the owners want to make customers look as good as possible in their mirrors - such as up-market clothing stores.

In any case, it's pretty pointless to allow yourself to get obsessively fixated on how you look. People will judge your attractiveness by their own personal standards, and the fact is that the vast majority of people you see when you're out in public will barely notice you and don't really care what you look like. Unless you're stunningly beautiful or breathtakingly hideous, you're no more than part of the urban wallpaper to virtually everyone you come across.

Odds are everyone will have a different opinion of how you look, based on their own taste.

It's VERY normal. I think I look almost old and not very nice at all when I look in Target's self checkout cameras or the mirrors in the clothing section! It's definitely the lighting. The brightness of it flatters absolutely no one. It almost makes me look like I have bags under my eyes.

The few times I've gotten a professional haircut, the lighting and mirrors have been like that as well. It's ten times worse when your hair is sprayed wet and you look like a drowned rat on top of it.

Like everyone else has said though, most people in public don't pay much attention to each other and people all find different things attractive by their own perspective. I wouldn't worry too much about it, and you're most likely not ugly!

Hey I tell u smth...public places have bad mirrors that's all..but yours could be good...but somehow by myself I almost believe no mirror..because in each one I look different..so my solution is :make sure u look good in two or three mirrors at least this means u will look generally good and even in real life,u can also test your cameras, make sure you look good in all these, then 100% u're looking good and no one can say the opposite :) ,I'm just giving a solution for someone who just wants to look good and believes the mirrors..

Some public lighting is truely horrendous- it’s a reflection on their choice of light not your face.

Well considering I used to tske my physique seriously, admittedly way too seriously, I know the feeling. Some places the lighting isn't good or you just had a big meal and look fatter or something. Don't gey so caught up in it.
