Is it normal to look at people’s lips instead of making eye contact?

So I have this habit of looking at people’s mouths instead of making eye contact during a conversation. Ive also caught people doing the same thing to me. I think I do it mostly because I’m kinda shy and I also feel like I can understand what they’re trying to say better when I’m looking at their mouths instead of their eyes. Do you also do this? And is it normal?

I do it too. When I look people in the eyes I feel awkward and start over thinking it, like, do I look at the right eye or the left eye? And soon I'm so focused on where to look that I completely miss what they're saying. It's totally normal among shy people, though sometime you gotta try to break through that insecurity, such as at interviews

    • I always try to make as much eye contact but it tends to make me lose focus on what theyre saying because, like u, I start overthinking.

If you struggle to make eye contact, just look between their eyes.

I don't think it's normal, because technically the proper thing to do is to look another person in the eye when communicating. I can usually tell when someone isn't looking me in the eye. I wouldn't call looking at someone's mouth when having a conversation normal unless you are hearing impaired, and can read lips.
