Is it normal to lie about ethnicity?

I know this guy who pretends to be Italian when hes really from Yemen. He even changed his name. He says that its not popular to be middle eastern in the US these days and it makes his life easier to do this. I can understand, but is this common? Do lots of people lie to appear less foreign?

My brother once convinced his friends that he was 1/4 Japanese.

He's white as fuck. He has dumb friends.

He did it for laughs, though.

A friend of mine who is blonde/blue eyed once insisted to the class that she was Korean. Everyone said "no way" but she got mad...turns out she meant Ukrainian but didn't know how to pronounce it.
But we were in 3rd grade.

It's a human phenomena I guess to lie about something about yourself to appear more sexy or for safety. Some races are thought of as more sexy and so people will lie that they are Mediterranean, South American or partly black instead of a not so sexy race like Asian. But that depends on preferences...For safety people might pretend to be white.

I had an ex-boyfriend who said he was half American Indian and I have many reasons to believe he was not even from the western hemisphere...

Yeah, but he took it a lot farther than that. He said he was a member and spent part of his childhood on the nearby reservation...none of which turned out to be true.

Wow that makes me really sad that someone would go out of their way to do this just to feel appreciated. :/ smh People need to stop judging people based on race, religion, and their orientations. It makes no sense and is getting really irritating to me.

I knew a guy who told me he was 100% Italian, but when he called the caller ID said someone named Jones was calling. Mwahahaha!

Nope, he was a skinny little blond haired, blue eyed, white boy. Although he was of partially Italian ancestry I think he wanted me to assume he had mob connections or something stupid and lame like that. Funny thing is I don't find what he wanted to be or portray attractive in the least. I'd knock over a whole bunch of Guidos just to get to one skinny little blonde guy.

I find guidos are severely overrated.

It really depends on the country and the person's true ethnic group. I know a few Chinese immigrants in Japan whom have changed their names to appear more Japanese and would claim that they're half Singaporean and half Japanese to avoid the Chinese stigma.
