Is it normal to laugh at someone who tells they are sad?

so whenever someone tells me, or i hear a conversation where someone tells that they are sad, or tell that they have had a traumatic or sad experience, i burst out in laughter. i swear to God i dont feel happy about their pain. i dont know why, i just cant control it. what should i do? should i get help?

I only smile or roll my eyes if I know the person has no problems and nothing to be whining about.

I only laugh if it's serious. Like if the person finds out he has HIV.

It's because you're focussed on yourself and your responses to other people's suffering rather than on the sufferers.

I think it's similar to people who make idiotic remarks to people who are really upset because they've never taken the trouble to develop empathy, although ironically they usually expect it from others.

It's just another form of selfishness. You can change it if you can learn to genuinely care about other people

  • Their sadness probably makes you really uncomfortable and I think laughing is a way of easing the tension of the situation, if even just for yourself.

You may have Pseudobulbar Affect (PBA). It's a neurologic disorder of emotional incontinence. It has many potential causes and is treatable.

I do when I hear it people I hate. That usually means everything is going as planed.

  • Sometimes I will think I better not do something and just the thought of that makes me do it anyways.
I think most people do this to an extent but I do it really badly to where it's sent me to the hospital a few times.

Laughing inappropriately sent you to the hospital?

      • No, doing things I shouldn't just because I though of doing it has sent me to the hospital, such as punching out glass windows or impulsively doing stupid things like trying to stab a pen I was holding with a knife.

Well I can see that would be a bit scary for other people to be around that: are you genuinely out of control when you do things like that, or just allowing yourself to act out?

          • I genuinely loose control. I wasn't even mad when I punched the window out. It's like something takes over my body and controls me. I remember what I do, but it doesn't feel like me.

So what are you doing about it? Are you on any medication or drugs which could be causing it?
