Is it normal to lack empathy?

Is it normal to lack the ability to feel empathy towards others? Like not really caring when something tragic happens to someone else. Its not like I chose not to care, I just can't feel connected to someone else's problems. Most of the time I don't know what I'm supposed to say to someone when they tell me something's happened like someone close to them dying or their wife cheating on them etc. IIN?

You sound like you have major problems and you just might be a sociopath

Well.. do you lack empathy to people that are close to you as well? Do you only really care about yourself? Do you care about other creatures?

The lack if empathy could be alarming...as most serial killers lack empathy... or other criminals
This does not mean you will do anything as drastic...just a concern o would have... talking to a professional would be your best bet.

I used to feel that way but once I got into a similar situation I began to empathize with others.

It's normal. I really can't feel empathy for other people's tragedies either. Usually when they're going through something I'll just pretend to care and give a standard generic response like "I hope things get better for you", or "I'm sorry for your loss", or whatever response applies to their situation. However, I do have empathy for the problems some of my family members go through.
