Is it normal to immediately throw away birthday gifts if they're bad?

I have a trash bin and the bad ones go in there right away. I really hate it when people don't think and get me some random crap:

- my aunt gave me a used self help book from the 70s for people with low self esteem
- my brother gave me a mug with a happy face on it
- my dad gave me a tool box for tools I don't own
- my mom gave me shrimp paste

I broke the mug and squeezed the paste out all over the other gifts to make it clear I wasn't just storing them in the trash bin.

If the gifts are garbage I might have done the same thing, but I suspect this problem goes back a ways and didn't start with this birthday.
Do you put time and effort into it when you remember their birthdays?
Do you have a custom of throwing away their gifts to you, so they are reluctant to get you anything costly?
My Mom used to do the same thing to most of the family. She would buy stuff at yard sales and sometimes even forget to remove the price tags.
Maybe you should save those useless gifts and "regift" them to your family on their occasions. Then they might get the picture.
Maybe before your next birthday you could start dropping hints to your family to clue them in. You know, you could be saying, "I always wished I had one of _____", or "when I get some money I'm gonna buy myself a _______".
I can appreciate your frustration with the useless gifts you received, but you're probably not going to make things any better by letting them see what you did to your gifts this time.
    Good luck!

That's so rude. Why do they buy you anything at all?

Has it not occurred to you that they're sending you a message about what you give them?

Downright ungrateful and disrespectful. No one had to do anything for you. Be grateful they cared enough to. What if they didnt get you shit??? You'd probably be writing a post about how they dnt care and could have at least gotten you something small....

Are they all really poor? And what did you last give them for presents?
