Is it normal to hope that one day ending your own life wont be a stigma?

Why cant it be accepted. Instead of people making such a big deal of it why not give someone a nice sendoff instead. You dont judge someone who is going through physical torture and begs for death so why all the can of worms with the s word

I lost a dear friend to suicide years ago. I wish he had been able to find what he needed to get through what was hurting him, but he couldn't. It saddens me that he felt this was his only solution. I don't judge him for what he did, I just wish he hadn't done it. He had a beautiful heart and a beautiful, but damaged, mind. I still love him for who he was and who he could have continued to be.

I don't think he was selfish for what he did. He had so many problems, I can't imagine how much it weighed on him, nor do I imagine I know the full extent of what he went through.

However, mental illness is a grey area in regards to whether the person will "get better". Physical illness can be, too, but it is usually more easily defined. That's why I feel uneasy about allowing access to assisted suicide for mental illness - not to mention the capacity to consent is more than likely impaired - whereas I feel that it should be legal for the terminally ill who wish to use it.

Why does it matter what anyone thinks if your dead?

    • I dont care what they think but how they feel. Just cause I want to end my life dont mean I am ok shitting on the life of everyone I care about. I keep thinking how I can end my life without causing them pain and shame but cant think of a way.

There pretty much isn't thats why suicide is a selfish choice.

The thing about suicide is that it shouldn't be easy. There's a reason you're more likely to kill yourself if you have own a gun - It's just easier. If you have to go somewhere and prepare your own death you have a lot more time to think than if you just pull a trigger. In the same way it's important that your social environment is trying to keep you alive and help you through though times. Because if everyone was like: "Yeah, maybe you really should kill yourself." Some people would do it that otherwise could have moved on.
At the same time I won't judge anyone who did it and it's so important that people feel free to talk about suicidal thoughts.

  • I thought the mainstream opinion was that suicide was awful under any circumstances. Did not expect such a high amount of yes on something like this. Pleasantly surprised.

I agree so hard. I have severe social anxiety that makes living unbearable for me. I cannot even have a conversation with someone in real life. In addition to that, I'm half Japanese living in America. The combination of these 2 things means I'll never have a successful career, a relationship, or friends. Living is quite pointless for me. Would be much preferable if I never existed. However, my family would never understand such things because of the stigma, so I could never commit suicide, as it would very negatively impact their lives.

Disclaimer: This post DOES NOT state that I plan on committing suicide.

Also, I know this doesnt help, but suicide was actually seen as an honorable way to preserve one's dignity and avoid shame among the samurai.

Dude, Keanu Reeves is half Asian too and tons of women go crazy for him, not to mention the fact that he is a multi millionaire and spends a lot of his energy on contributing to charities and causes he cares about .

I think it's because it's seen as a completely avoidable death. Even though most people don't do much to help when the person's alive, in hindsight they still think something could have been done. So it seems very....regrettable.

Also, if it was totally acceptable, the concern might be that there's more of a tendency for people to do it. "Feeling depressed and suicidal? Don't waste time getting help, just kill yourself and get it over with!"
It's people's lives. And they hinge on one decision, one action made at a really low point, when their mental state really isn't conducive to be making life or death decisions. And if they didn't do it, things probably would have gotten better at some point.

But I don't think people look at it the right way, either. If someone commits suicide, they're obviously in a huge amount of emotional (or physical, or both) pain; and I don't think people really appreciate that. There's sometimes a really negative reaction to the person, or they're seen as selfish which is totally unfair.
When you're that depressed, it seems like the people wanting you to stay alive are actually the selfish ones.
    So....I kind of agree, I guess. I don't know.
