Is it normal to hold such a strong attachment to inanimate objects?

I have a much stronger attachment to inanimate objects than most people. Really anything given to me as a gift by someone important or in any way related to them or a pet I've had, or anything that reminds me of a past time in my life that I miss, I cherish deeply, almost as much as the people and memories in my life.

The way I see it, those things are all you might have left besides memories once the person or pet associated with them passes (or some great times in your life are over), and even when people constantly come and go throughout life and prove to be not who you thought they were, the things always stay and will always be reminders of the good times and the good people in your life.

I have an assortment of things that nothing could ever replace and that I hold dear to me, while most people I know have no problem throwing everything they own for something new.

Is it normal to feel this way?

I feel like that too, it was worse when I was a child. I could literally not throw a goddamn paper away because I thought it had feelings and a character. It’s pretty annoying

Sometimes people attach sentimental value to objects. Heirlooms fall into that category. It is normal. Maybe try not to let it become hoarding though.

I kind of wish I had some kind of memorabilia from my childhood or earlier point in life. When I was younger it didn't seem to matter but now I would give plenty to have just a few things, even if it would seem "junk" to others.

The only downside of having such things is there is a chance they could get ruined or some asshole steals them.

I can be quite sentimental, and nostalgic myself!

Me and barbells. Good friends. She's always there for me and always feels the same. We really understand each other emotions well.

Sounds like the beginnings of a hoarder.

  • I fell in love with my refrigerator a few years ago. There was something so deep and so beautiful behind that cold steel facade. It entranced me. That refrigerator became more than my food storage device. It became a beacon of light in my life. When it broke and I had to throw it out I felt I had lost something, as if a part of my humanity had evaporated, and all that was left was loneliness.

    It's call materialism.
Things are useful but they are not important.
You chose to make them important.
