Is it normal to hide your real music tastes?

I mainly listen to classical music like Wagner, Chopin, etc. I've talked about my music tastes with a few people before when they asked, and the reaction I got was them thinking I was a pretentious snob for not listening to pop music. Should I pretend to like pop music so people will think better of me?

Be yourself, you will be more compatible as far as friends and romantic relationships are concerned with people like yourself. Maybe you crave acceptance and that's why you're trying to conform, but being surrounded by people you have nothing in common with won't alleviate you're loneliness. It's much better to be alone and lonely than to feel lonely when you're not alone. Try to be yourself.

I have a similar feeling. I always wear headphones so nobody can hear the music I listen to.

I use to play the violin and piano a lot as a child and teenager, so my taste in music was classical for many years. Even had my mother buy me the complete collection of Mozart and Beethoven on CD. When I was finally able to get an ipod, it was great, but I had my ipod called a waste by those of different music taste. I didn't mind though, because if any were given a musical instrument or a music sheet, they would neither know how to read it, nor know how to play any instruments; it's people like those who think music is just singing, when there's so much more to it.

So don't hide your music taste. Embrace it and find friends who like it too.

I like classical music too, but that would somehow scare me to admit it among other people (espacially those who like it as well - paradoxically) because I'm totally clueless about it from the technical point of view. I don't know the meaning of all that sygnifying in the titles and stuff. AT ALL. I just enjoy the sound of music.

I still kinda get your friends for feeling like listening to classical music is a thing for snobs. Why? Because there really are lots of snobs who think they are better than anyone else just because they listen to classical music. Or because they can play chess. Or do some other "elegant and intelligent" things. But your friends shouldn't judge you anyway, especially if you're nice in general.

P.S. What are your favourite Chopin compositions? I started to listen to his music only a few days ago (yeah, delving into new stuff because of more free time on holiday) and I don't really understand why people love him so much (which is a bit of a crime because I'm Polish). Which pieces/concertos/etc. composed by him would you recommend?

    • Well said. You pretty much summed up most of my thoughts about it.

I can't stand people who treat music like a fashion statement as opposed to just listening to it for their own personal entertainment. You can always tell someone doesn't genuinely enjoy music when they feel the constant need to talk bad about other genres. Classical music isn't a higher art form than other genres of music, just a different flavor, and I hate being grouped in with the snobs who think one piece of art can be objectively better than another. It's not just the classical community either. Pretty much every non-mainstream genre has those obnoxious people who run around screaming "GEE WHIZ GUYS THIS MUSIC SURE IS BETTER THAN JUSTIN BIEBER LIKE IF YOU AGREE", and then all the sane people who legitimately enjoy the music get stereotyped alongside those idiots as being hipsters.

I don't have any friends IRL by the way. The judgment I'm talking about comes from strangers or acquaintances making small talk. They don't outright say they think I'm pretentious, but I can tell they're thinking it, because they'll ask questions afterwards like "are you rich?", etc. If I did have friends though, I wouldn't feel the need to be a carbon copy of them. I don't think it's that important to have a lot in common with a friend, just that you enjoy their personality overall. The only reason I have a desire to conform and project a false image of myself is because I know it would improve my ability to influence people. I think it's important to be yourself around close friends and family, but when you're trying to bolster your public image to get that promotion, for instance, being viewed as pretentious by your peers due to your tastes is a big disadvantage. You know what I mean?

      My favorite Chopin compositions are.
      1.Etude Op.10 No.3
      2.Ballade Op.23 No.1
      3.Etude Op. 25 No.5
      4.Nocturne Op.48 No.1
      5.Nocturne Op.9 No.2

I get what you mean. Sad to see you don't have any real friends though. And that you feel like not being yourself can somehow help you... But good luck getting that public promo :P!

P.S. Thanks for sharing your favourite Chopin stuff. Boutta listen to those pieces, I'm happy to have almost all of them played by Evgeny Kissin on YT.

Do not ever pretend to listen to that swill! If they don't understand your music preferences, that's on them. Lol

Your friends seem like douchebags. But yeah, I'm often afraid to share my musical taste too. But I think that's still better than people thinking they have the perfect taste in music and everyone else is wrong.
I don't assume my music is objectively "the best". I just listen to what I enjoy, and that's what you should do too.

If anyone is a pretentious snob, it's the one judging others for their musical preferences.

I tend to listen to alot of music people do not know. Yet, I have learned that some pop music can be fun and occassionally thats what I perfer to listen to. But you dont have to. I would however not diss pop music especially around those who enjoy it. Likewise they shouldnt diss your style of music. You can also share music artists you like. Alot of times people only listen to pop because they do not want to take the time to find other kinds of music. I myself love looking for obscure bands online. But others may not so If i share a song with them I found via the internet, they might fall in love with it and they would not have had done their own research. You can do people a favor like that.
