Is it normal to hear the clock ticking, water drops, but not the tv?

It all happened a few years ago, when i was in the living room and a (sci-fi) movie was playing on the TV, my dad was with me too. I raised the volume because I wasn't hearing it quite well.

My dad said to me: "Isn't it already loud enough?"
I responded: "Well, I'm not hearing them talk."
My dad said again: "What? Did you not hear them say *quote from the movie*?"
He snaps his fingers next to my ear; "Are you hearing this?"
I responded: "Yes, I am hearing that."
And then he said: "That's weird."

I ignored it back then, but just recently I'm thinking about it.
