Is it normal to hear a strange word half asleep and later learn it exists?

One night i was half asleep sleep when i heard a word which sounded like
H-Y-G-E-Y-A. at that moment i became conscious because i was shocked at the clarity of the voice. i took note of the pronunciation and the next day i checked it up and to my bewilderment there it was, staring me right in the face!!!...Hygeia(goddess of health) with the same pronunciation!!i guess "hygiene" was formed from it but I don't think i have ever heard that word before. So were did it come from? are stuff like this normal? what could it mean?

    Hearing voices calling out names when you fall asleep is quite common and known as hypnagogic sounds. My guess would also be that you somehow came across this word previously. Maybe it was mentioned on the radio or TV while you were preoccupied with something else. The subconscious takes in an enormous amount of information.
    This reminds of a girl I knew whose name means moonbeam in a foreign language. When her mother was pregnant with her she dreamed of the letters of this name falling from the night sky, one by one. She had no idea what it meant or what language it was, but she loved it. When she found out about it, she decided to call her daughter that name. I like this story and fully believe it, but I still think that she had probably heard this name somewhere.

      yes, and its amazing how often we know things using our subconscious minds that seem almost impossible. I have had many experiences with things like what the OP said

    It's happened to me a few times. The only thing I can fathom is that you heard it in a medical 5 years ago and now your subconscious is tying it to some previous knowledge 10 years before that.

    Or you could be in the Matrix, Neo.

    Maybe someone you didn't see standing near by was trying to tell you that you have bad hygiene.

      Haha. Typical of IIN users to get a laugh out of stuff like this. I take good care of myself my friend. What i heard sounded nothing like hygiene.
