Is it normal to have on and off depression?

So I have realized I've been depressed for a few years now but I find it strange because it's like an on and off depression. Most of the time I'm in my room reading, mostly because I'm an introvert, but I feel really emotionally exhausted sometimes and broken while other times I'm normal and happy. Sometimes I'm just sitting away from my friends during school and not talking, while other times I'm clinging onto them and talking and playing with them. I don't know if this is how depression is like or if I'm just weird.

You might be bipolar but it seems to be normal to go through bouts of depression

  • Recurrent depression is more common than chronic depression. Also recurrent depression is different than bipolar. Recurrent depression comes and goes but doesn't include manic episodes.

Have you been diagnosed with depression by a registered psychiatrist? I hate how people use the word 'depression' everytime they feel alittle down. Depression is a mental condition, not the flu, it doesn't just come and go.

Same, but I don't think mine is on and off... Usually, there'd be a reason... Like when I'm depressed, I get over it, but the next hour, it comes back because of the memory of the event, which made me depressed.
