Is it normal to have moments of euphoria when staying awake for over 20 hours?

I never really stayed awake for unusually long of my own volition before last year. My high school had absolutely no party scene and I found it easy enough to get away with only studying in the day. Now I'm in university, and I've had to stay up increasingly more to study.

Yesterday, I was up for 22 hours, and, in those last few hours, I had seemingly inexplicable bursts of intense euphoria. They lasted for about ten seconds each. I could still think clearly, I was just unrealistically, nonsensically f-cking elated. It was the second time I've had this; both times, I had been awake for over 20 hours.

At the time, I wasn't about to complain, but now I'm a little concerned. I've never used any drugs to keep myself awake apart from coffee, and I usually love sleep, so I can't explain this at all.

Has anyone else had this? Is it normal?

It all comes down to biology.. Your pineal gland secretes melatonin and controls your circadian rhythm, which naturally causes you to be tired. If you force you body past that phase by staying up so long your adrenal medulla will secrete the hormone epinephrine (adrenaline) to keep you awake, because your brain thinks you are in a dire need of staying awake because you are resisting sleep intentionally. So your euphoric feeling is basically a surge of epinephrine to your body which as you said leaves you totally conscience just feeling really good. However, this is probably not the best think, because your circadian rhythm is important to your immune system as said by person above and you need sleep to recuperate, let alone to function mentally.

Thank you for the detailed answer. I don't plan on doing it very often, haha; the euphoria and the added hours of productivity weren't worth how bad I felt in the morning.

I've had thus before when I was younger before I dappled with drugs. I stayed up for a long time and had this Dort of feeling I was beside myself and feeling a bit high, I think it happened twice. But I wouldn't advise to it.

It's fun, but you are compromising your immune system each time. Your mind might not need a break, but your body does.
