Is it normal to have extreme food cravings if you're not pregnant?

I'll be craving one thing for awhile, then I'll decide I want something else if I see a commercial or something. Right now I'm craving McDonald's because I'm watching a video focused around it. I remember craving tacos one night at 10 or so for no reason. I don't even like tacos all that much. It's to the point now that if I'm craving something, I've gone so far as to start crying if I can't have it (though I was on my period on one occasion for that). I won't eat something for a meal if it doesn't seem good to me right then, which is why I rarely finish any of my restaurant leftovers--I just don't have any desire to at mealtimes. As I said in the title, I'm not pregnant. Does this happen with all women? Can any medications affect this?

It kinda depends. The fact that your cravings are super intense, and the fact that you're craving things that you don't even like could mean that you have a vitamin or protein deficiency, but the fact that you're craving processed food could mean that you're addicted to the sugars and leptin and the dopamine rush.

This one time, over the course of a few months, I started craving oranges like crazy...crazy. I would think about oranges all day (and I don't even love oranges). I ended up going to the store and buying this giant bag of 12 oranges, ripping it open and eating all of them in one sitting- I burned the fuck out of my face and made myself sick. It turns out that the medication I was on was preventing me from absorbing vitamin c...which can kill you. It's kinda funny that my body knew something was wrong way before I did.

It's worth looking into- maybe you could talk to a doctor or a nutritionist.

    • I'll keep that in mind. The sugar addiction is probably the most likely culprit. I've been addicted to sugary drinks in particular--when I'm at home I almost always have either an orange soda (I've had a thing for them, and I don't even really like the taste of artificial orange flavor) or a grape Powerade with whatever water bottle I'm drinking. I bring the water just in case I can motivate myself to drink it. I am on a few medications (2 for bipolar disorder, 1 for ADHD) and I'll try and find out if that could be part of the issue.

Certain meds can cause food cravings or appetite increase.
But, maybe you really need meat if youre anemic. Either way I think its normal.
