Is it normal to have a period early with no warning?

(WARNING: Might be a bit long)

Calling all people with vaginas or with knowledge about them...this question must've been asked a lot, but I have more things I'd like to add to it.
For the past week, I've had a pinched nerve that's caused me severe back and neck pain, enough for me to complain about it (physical pain rarely bothers me). Even now, I'm still getting a prickling sensation all over.

Usually, my period would be due a week from now, it is very regular. However, it happened today without warning. My breasts normally get tender and sore before menstruation occurs, sometimes I get very slight cramping...I just know it'll be soon when this happens, and I know when it's coming...but bam, here it is.

No medication, drugs, alcohol, anything...no birth control, not sexually active at all (I'm asexual), and no change of diet for a long time. I'm 18, had regular periods for a couple years, healthy weight.

Is this normal, maybe stress-related due to my injury, or is it something I might need to keep an eye on?

Completely normal. It happens. 6
Stress, most likely. 2
You might want to see a doctor, but it shouldn't be serious. 4

  • Sorry to hear that, I know how annoying unexpected periods can be. It could be stress, or simply a hormone imbalance. Even if you've always had regular periods, it could change at any time if the balance between your two female hormones gets disrupted. I usually had fairly regular periods when they first started, then they started to dissapear for months at a time, then they got worse when I went on the birth control shot and now that I'm on the strongest birth control pill you get, I choose a continuous cycle so as to not get periods but still get occasional spotting. I know you mentioned you don't need birth control, but the pill is a wonderful way of forcing your body into a set cycle so you can be almost 100% sure when you're gonna menstruate so you should really consider it.

It could be stress. Have you been around any other women lately? Maybe you are getting pulled into their cycles. I dont think it's anything to worry about.

    • No, actually...I've been inside. My mom's 59 and far past getting periods.
Thanks for commenting...guess it's stress after all.

Periods can come early, late or take awhile to regulate themselves. Specially if you are a teenager.
