Is it normal to hate hershey's chocolate? (is it normal to prefer lindt, dove or others)

I grew up with Hershey's, but once I discovered Dove/Galaxy, Lindt (especially Lindor truffles), and Ghirardelli, I couldn't go back. It was like I had never eaten real chocolate before at all!

Other brands I've tried, especially south american chocolate, melts in your mouth and feels "warm" and tastes heavenly.

But Hershey's tastes so weird to me, especially the chocolate syrup ... it tastes like it has metal in it or some kind of dirt.

I work in a chocolate shop and I can tell you, Hersheys no longer uses quality ingredients. They stopped using real cocoa butter and replaced it with vegetable oil, so it may not even technically be chocolate anymore!
I think if Mr Hershey saw his company today (cheap ingredients, outsourcing to other countries) hed be disgusted because he was very much into making your community better with local business.
Sorry for the rant, I live near Hershey!

He would probably agree with you now , you know how sometimes the founders kids completely sell out.

Different chocolate for different people. I like all of those listed (except Galaxy). I never had that one.

The cookies N cream Hershey bars are the best IMO

I'll have to disagree with you on that. Sometimes things are demonstrably and objectively better. You're comparing some of the worst chocolate in the world with some of the best, by a variety of measures. Hershey chocolate barely qualifies as chocolate, it's more like a chocolate flavored candy.

You misunderstood me. I'm just talking about Hershey's (Out of Hershey's that's the best they offer). Not other types.

Well fuck. I spent a good five minutes writing that.

But I honestly don't mind Hershey's. It's decent to me.

    • Galaxy is just europe's name for Dove. If you like one you like the other.

Maybe, but European is always better.

I don't like it either and I know what you're saying in your description of it.

Jerkface. If you are going to talk about chocolate the least you can do is bring some to share with the class.

Hershey's disgusting. I love Sirius Noi (Icelandic brand), Cadbury, Ritter Sport, Alter Eco, Green & Black's, (this brand that puts sea salt in their chocolate. I can't remember what their name is.), etc.

I'm from the UK, so I grew up with Cadbury's.

But Lindt is good too, and Milka (made my Mondelēz). Belgian chocolates are always lovely - I love Guylian's chocolate and praline shells... mmm. And Ferrero Rocher is amazing (but horrendously expensive).

I'll eat proper dark chocolate occasionally 70+% cocoa, which is nice. Like a different snack altogether.

I did try Hershey's a while back - I didn't like it. Tasted like it was made out of 90% sugar or something, with very little cocoa content. I get the impression a lot of American chocolate is like that?

Your impression is correct. I'm even willing to bet that the Lindt you eat in the UK is way better than the Lindt we have here.

I found this blog article about the difference between British and American chocolate:
        http://www.quora.com/Why-do-British-and-American-chocolate-taste-different

        Pretty interesting :)

I'm sure there's some great chocolate in the US - I've just had a very limited experience.

I don't think anybody would claim Hershey's is the pinnacle of American chocolate, even if it is one of the most popular brands there.

I'll still use them for s'mores, but once I read a post on here about someone who wouldn't eat Hershey's chocolate until he picked it apart to make sure there were no bug parts in it and I've never been able to look at Hershey's the same since.
