Is it normal to go to a ex-coworkers mother's funeral?

So I worked at this place and of course had some co-workers. I was never more than work associates with all of them, no family intro, no after work anything, nothing personal on any level.

Time goes on and I leave the job and move out of state. A few years later my mother passes and I go back to her funeral. I look in the back row and one of my ex-coworkers is sitting.

Is this strange or normal?

    I don't think it's odd. Some people just believe in paying their respects. Of course he could have a shrine built to you in his basement too.

      So does this mean that YOU would go to one of your coworkers mother's funeral? A coworker that you really only know in passing and via very small convo, without an invite.

        I wouldn't. But I'm not an overly caring person. Some people are and just think it's the respectful thing to do.

    Maybe your coworker thought highly of you and wanted to pay their respects.

    It was a nice gesture. Just take it at that.

      Nope he didn't know her or anyone in my family, or even remote family. I asked him.

      I asked him why he came to my mothers funeral since he did not know her or anyone in my family. I said he came because he knew me.

      Still he didn't get an invite, the only way he could have known she passed was from reading the obituary in the News paper. But who does that?

        Since when do people need an invitation to attend a funeral? It sounds as if he came to support you, so why are you questioning it?
