Is it normal to get very little hours at work compared to everyone else?

I get (on average) about 8 hours a week at my job. I think that it may be because I'm very shy (bad social anxiety) and I'm not exactly the brightest guy around. I always do all of my work and witness my coworkers being rewarded for their complete laziness. Are lazy people considered more desirable than shy people? I would ask people for their shifts, but my mom has to drive me to work (no license) so I can't guarantee I'd be able to make do that.

  • Unfortunately, at most jobs, you'll have to do more than just your work in order to get any recognition. You have to be sociable too. I realize it's difficult for you, but it is a skill you'll have to work hard at to improve if you want to get noticed.

It would also improve your ability to get more shifts at work if you were available for any extra shifts, even on short notice. Can't you take a bus to work or ride a bicycle, instead of relying on your mum to drive you?

So, until things change in those two areas, you might be stuck with low hours at work.

Have you talked to your boss to find out if there are any areas you can improve upon at work? Usually, employers give an employee evaluation a couple of times a year, especially in entry-level positions. It's a critique, but it's helpful to understand how they view your strengths and weaknesses. Never be offended by them or get defensive; just use the advice to improve your work skills.

I could ride my bike if my mom would let me, but I guess that is out of the question. Public bus no. I don't live near bus stops.

Haha, yeah I know how you feel. While I don't get THAT kind of low amount of hours, it does seem that the more sociable people stand a better chance at getting more. I'm a lot like you, I am kinda shy, but I DO my work. My situation is that I'm in school right now, and it's hard for them to schedule me hours.

    Best of luck.

  • 8 hours a week?? What do you do exactly? Good bosses usually really like it when their employees show initiative. It won't hurt to just ask for another shift or two.
