Is it normal to get very annoyed when asked why you don't have a boyfriend?

I just can't stand it when people ask me why I don't have a boyfriend, especially family members. I never know what to say back to them besides "I don't know." What do they expect me to say, "Oh I guess I'm just not good enough for any guys out there?" This is something that bothers me more than anything!! Maybe I don't have a BF because I'd rather focus on other things or I just haven't found the right person to be with. It just seems like such a huge deal to everyone else. I mean why do they care anyways, it's my life! Plus it makes me feel really bad about myself, and it seems like they're rubbing in the fact that I don't have a BF. Anyone else feel the same way??

I completely understand. I am 19 and never had a boyfriend. When people ask, it's like putting a wrench in my heart and turning it. It's one thing to ask if I have one, but it's another to ask why. I don't feel like I should be obligated to make up some excuse for my love life or lack thereof.

  • You don't NEED a boyfriend to be happy.
Sometimes it's fun and sometimes it's a pain in the ass.

When people ask you inappropriate or offensive questions, you should turn around and ask them, "Why do you ask?" That usually makes them stop and think for a second or two - if they have any manners, it will make them realize how rude it is.

  • Yeah, its a pretty asinine question. Whether I got out of a bad relationship and am taking a break, or taking time to focus on myself, enjoy being single, or haven't met anyone lately who I'm interested in, its my business and why the hell am I expected to explain it to them? I especially hate the ones who act like they're trying to figure out whats wrong with you that's keeping you from being in a relationship lol. I don't worry too much about it though, the people who ask those questions have marriage and reproduction as their highest attainable life goal, and that's not what I'm about.

^ lol I was going to suggest that.
Just say, "My girlfriend would get pissed"...flash a grin and stroll away humming. Offer no explanation haha!

I'm married now, but I remember people asking me all the time before " why don't you have a boyfriend?" it too made me feel so bad about myself & I never knew what to say. What CAN you say? I used to say that I was really picky, I like being single, I'm having a contest with myself to see how long I can go without a boyfriend, etc etc :-)
I totally understand though, I wish you could just tell those people to shut up!!

  • When people ask me that, I just say "because I'm not gay!" But people generally do not ask me that.

yeah i hate when people ask me that too :/ i'm 18 and never had a bf. it'd be nice to have one, but it's not the most important thing, at least not at the moment. plus it's hard to find a guy that's exactly my type.

I know. I'm 20 and have never dated, so it's a question I've heard more than once. I always say I'm not really interested, which is partly true. The bigger truth is that no one's ever asked me out... but that's not what you tell people.

Yes! I get extremely annoyed when my grandma, sister or aunts ask me if I have a boyfriend. I find that the older I get, the more they ask. It's not like my life is incomplete without a man. I don't need a man to be happy! Romantic relationships just seem to be so much more trouble than they're worth.

I always got really annoyed when my family (aunts, uncles, cousins, etc) would ask me when I would get a boyfriend or get married, etc. Now I'm married and they always ask when I'm going to have kids! Arg!!

Yeah, I get that a lot too but I just ignore it. I don't have to justify why I haven't on my opinion

  • Hell yeah! Holy shit anytime a family member brings up me not having a girlfriend it drives me crazy. Even when I'm with a girl and they bring her up in any way I feel like saying "yeah fuck off"
