Is it normal to get annoyed when people call it a crank call not a prank call

I have heard people use both terms in reference to ringing someone anonymously and making a joke of it. I surely have hahaha good times. It shits me to hear it called a Crank call and when a television show called Crank Callers came out it threw me way off track and made me question my own beliefs. Can a few people please clarify this for me.

  • Not normal. Crank. Prank. Who cares? The spirit behind the word doesn't change so why are you getting your pannies in a bunch?

I don't like "crank" either. It sounds irritatingly wrong, and what is worse, it makes me wonder if everyone I have known (including myself) has been wrong calling it a "prank" call.

The first time I heard somebody say crank, was when I was like 10 watching full house. DJ said it, and I remember saying to my mom, "She said it wrong! It's not crank it's prank!", and my mom told me that it can be said either way. I still prefer prank over crank.

I think crank came first too and then slowly morphed into prank. They both sound right to me.

    Crank definitely came first so....

I think it's because you know what prank means easily but you don't (or didn't) know how "crank" made sense so you felt more comfortable with "prank".

    Oh, I agree with you.

Crank call just sounds aggravatingly wrong.

But prank call is what I grew up knowing it as, so maybe it's just my ignorance or stuck-up view that i'm not accepting this imposter of a phrase.

It's both. I believe crank came first.
