Is it normal to get annoyed when people are rude to others about their grammar?

Also, spelling and all that. Specifically on the internet. It's like people forget that people from other countries are online. Sometimes it's pretty obvious that the person typing does not know English completely well. It's probably their second language that they are working hard to learn or perfect. Then someone is rude to them about it? And the people being rude probably don't even know anything other than English, so it's not very fair for them to insult someone's second language when they don't even have one.

Obviously this isn't always the case, but there's no way to know right off, so maybe keep that in mind when you start to insult someone for being unintelligent.

Some people are just nasty and need to get their kicks off somewhere.

I feel the same. Feel free to ignore if you think I wrote too long.
I asked a question on Y!A, "Do Wattpad has trolls?". Then, this answerer said that an infant is much smarter than me just because I accidentally made a grammar mistake of using do instead of does. It is such a small mistake to bother and becoming an asshole to somebody. I don't feel bad anymore because like you said, being an Asian, I learn both my language and English. I put so much effort to learn English still it won't be perfect.

I am glad that IIN at least don't have Grammar Nazi assholes. Too bad, IIN has rude bitch or dickhead but it can be said to other websites as well. If this people don't bother to be polite to me, I don't see any reason to put an effort to be polite to them.

It happened to me as well. I said "movie" instead of "video" and someone decided to make a drama about it and told me to learn english properly before using an english website. Well, I'm constantly learning new things when I use english websites, so...
I honestly don't mind people correcting me, unless they're rude.

If someone acted like that to an extent, they're not worth talking to. They're nothing special to judge us for our lack of grammar skill while we're putting effort to learn a secondary language.

What else are bitchy pretentious people going to feel good about? Its not like they have likable personalities after all.

Being unable to keep one's composure is far more degenerate than causing a case of damaged feeling.

What I find truly degenerate are people who only know one adjective with which to describe everything

True degeneracy is the inability to accurately describe what lies before one's eyes.

well tbh, I know foreign people with better grammar than some people who know English as a first language! So some people really are lazy and just don't care, or maybe they have dyslexia.

I want to apologise to anyone I've hurt by doing exactly what you're describing Sometimes when errors are funny I can't resist responding in a facetious manner, but sometimes I've been too harsh in response to posts I can't understand.

I'll continue to ask for explanations of incomprehensible posts and to point out that long posts without punctuation or paragraphing are hard to read, but in future I'll do my best to do so in a way that isn't patronising or insulting

Thank you for your post: it's made me stop and think about how what I write could adversely affect others.

One of the reasons why I joined an online community was to interact with native English speakers. There is so many things you can't learn within a classroom setting unless I was ordering from a menu or requesting for directions to the nearest police station.

I don't care about grammer if I can understand what they are trying to say or ask. I don't care if they have poor punction marks, Or run on sentences. I don't even care about spelling if it's close enough to know what they were trying to spell. This site is to help people or get maybe just use it as a vent.

English is my third language and I probably make a lot of grammar mistakes without even knowing; because, in my head, what I am typing sounds right.

Nobody on IIN has ever attacked me about my mistakes.. I think most of the people understand that a lot of us aren't English speaking... also, the majority of the IIN community are people who feel left out or don't feel like they "belong" whilst in the life outside of the screen/monitor; and they probably know how bleh it feels if someone makes them feel worthless or of lesser value..and they understand that feelings can get hurt on here much like when people hurt their feelings by making them feel littler than Stuart.

I believe if someone honestly wishes advice or help that it is to their benefit to check the spelling and do their best to phrase the request intelligibly. I find it totally disrespectful to request anything from others is a sloppy and haphazard way.
If a question is important enough to ask, why can't someone take a few seconds to proofread their post, at the very least?

    • I'm sure they're trying? Have you ever learned another language, it isn't easy, especially grammar and conjugation. You are so rude and pretentious.

I speak 4 languages, smart ass, how about you? And I communicate with companies in a multitude of countries, in several languages, to secure parts and service recommendations for equipment quite regularly, so I actually speak from experience. A well written and intelligible email, in whatever language, gets me quicker and and a more concise response than some lazy, inept, meandering plea for assistance.
Obviously, if someone is trying to communicate on IIN, in a language that they aren't fluent in, then they can be forgiven mistakes, but that doesn't excuse misspelling a word once and NOT another time in the same post. THAT is just lazy and sloppy. Everybody should proofread, it only takes a few seconds.
As for calling me "rude and pretentious", it takes a big person to attack another's opinion from the veil of anonymity, with personal insults. Very grown up.

I didn't say they shouldn't proofread. I said they probably did. Not everyone learns as easily, plus I'm talking about younger people here casually using the internet. This is no professional setting, and it's not their job to communicate in another language. They went out of their way to learn it, and a lot of them are probably still in the process of doing so.

Then I won't be anonymous, well I mean not as anonymous. Don't talk to me about "grown up" when you're a middle aged dude looking down on younger people attempting other languages. Most people don't even do that, I sure didn't. It's difficult for some, I barely passed Spanish class. Don't hold everyone to your own standards.

Quite obviously you are one of those that Dubya was talking about when he instituted 'no child left behind'. Teaching to the less apt students in a class only brings the smart ones down to the level of the stupidest student, it does not bring the stupid ones up.
That apparently how you see life. Nobody should strive to pull themselves up, but cruise at their minimum potential, right?
If you want to frequent a site that is littered by those who don't care whether they communicate coherently, don't care that others think poorly of them for not even bothering to proofread their posts, or just not get involved because it's too damn much trouble to decipher what someone is trying to ask, well then your attitude is surely going to give all the lazy, stupid people solace. Good on you for choosing the less challenging path in life.
As for non English speakers on here, I would guess that the number is less than 10%, so that's really a moot point.
Glad you did pass Spanish though. I'm sure it will help you at your job in the fast food industry.

Surely teaching the "less apt" has the potential to give them the means to "strive to pull themselves up"?

Why do you assume that all writing errors are because people don't care or that they're lazy and stupid?

Literally not what I said... I didn't say we shouldn't try, I said some people can't do things perfect even if they try. Why do you keep repeating yourself about people not trying, I already said that's not what I meant. Don't call young kids who aren't great at school stupid, they deserve help and respect as much as anyone else.

Don't insult me. I said I couldn't pass Spanish, not that I didn't try. Plus other than that my grades were fine, and I went to college. Again, why are you like forty and putting down people way younger than you.
