Is it normal to find the decline of society massively depressing?

My faith in humanity has finally hit zero percent. I really feel as though society is now beyond repair, and it can barely get any worse. People act like society has always been like this and that every modern generation has sucked as much as this one. This is untrue, and that is a fact.

The biggest problem with this generation is obvious: Mass drug use. Whereas as humans we should be able to live out our lives and not need to rely on intoxication, most of society is unbelievably weak and needy for recreational substances. I'd be fine if people did things in moderation, but most people outright refuse this. The sheer number of people who want to get high before they've even reached adulthood is terrifyingly gigantic. The very fact that so many people arrive at a point in their life and think "Wow, modern life is so boring. Looks like I'll need to get high in order to feel something!" is mind-boggling for me. There is an immense amount of pressure put on youth today to try drugs, and they're defended and glorified at every turn. We're now in a situation where NOT doing them makes you some kind of extraterrestrial. Trust me - you can't be straightedge anymore without being mocked. Everyone wants to try weed, everyone goes out drinking and people debate incessantly on whether you can even be addicted (because according to the youth this generation, there's no such thing as addiction). How weak and delusional can you get?

But this isn't the only problem. Society in general is just so pathetically shallow. People follow every trend, jump on the bandwagon at every opportunity, and live for pop culture to the point where people actually think they're better for being loyal to certain franchises. People actually ARGUE over which video game console is the best, for example. They actually ARGUE over electronic entertainment, and this is just the tip of a vast iceberg. It astounds me that we've reached a point in humanity where some of the most popular websites are Urban Dictionary, 4chan, 9gag, Reddit and BuzzFeed - websites that cater to people who are entertained by the most asinine things. And what happens if you don't support the mainstream? You get labelled a pretentious hipster who doesn't know to have fun. This what most people in this generation are like now. People celebrate weakness, amorality and stupidity, immaturity is considered a good thing, people complain when they don't get what they want (and don't know what they have) and alienate anyone with a different opinion. And hardly anybody realizes how pathetic it all is. Life is just a big, stupid joke now. Am I really the only person who's depressed about this?

People have always done these things and acted selfish or misguided in some way or another. There have always been drug addicts, it usually has a genetic influence. People have always been interested in trends and fads because it seems like a way for people to connect with each other.

Life is a big stupid joke now? I think it has always been a search for meaning and pleasure. I bet you're not alone in feeling like that, but I feel like thinking like that is very similar to that 'old times were much better' mentality. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I'm just saying.

    I hope this helps.

Corrupt police killing children, protestors, un armed people. Civil unrest across the entire world these past few years. Ebola and the Black Plague. Fracking. Monsanto. Global warming (NOT A FUCKING DEMOCRATIC INVENTION) the plastic in the oceans, missions of Americans plunged below the poverty line with no job, no income, no medical insurance. This is a powder keg waiting for a spark.

I agree, I think society is fucked as well. What you're saying is correct to an extent, but there are much bigger reasons as to why I think this. Unfortunately, I could probably write endlessly about it. I have a lot of theories and philosophies. Hell, maybe someday I'll write my own book.

All I can say is I know exactly what you mean - and I have no friends. I think being an outsider gives you a different outlook to the norm.

Yeh society is so bad these days...wish we could go back to the days when women couldn't legally work or own anything or vote and I really wish we could bring back slavery, human sacrifice, Roman gladiatorial contests with lions thrown in, witch hunts and 'witch ' burning etc. etc.

It can barely get any worse? Trust me, it can. It already was. Western society is not declining, in fact, quite the opposite. It is just a painfully slow process and the bad things appear to be more conspicuous.
You mention some rebellious teenagers with drug problems or some mainstream kiddos, but these are merely minor annoyances. Look at the islamic countries if you want to see a depraved and corrupted society, and be happy you don't live there.

Damn, way to focus on the negative. Shit dude, get your head out of your ass and get some new perspective.

Im not going to even bother explaining how negative you are with "humanity" and how much good youve missed in the variables of your statement with your narrow point of you, theyre too much.

And what IF humanity is declining? Are you just gonna cry and complain about it? If you care this much than go fucking do something about it.
It only takes one person to make a difference.

It sounds like you just spend too much time online, like the main base of "regulars" on said sites. This one included.

"The real world" is NOTHING like the conversations you read and see online, and in the comment sections. That is opinion and mostly opinion of the anonymous. The "average person" cannot handle confrontation or feeling chastised for their views, so will refrain from a lot, or use politically correct lingo in person. Real life....

Now back to modernization and "times are changing".. There is nothing wrong, necessarily, with fads/band-wagon types. Let people enjoy their 10min love of EDM, or hash-tag a serious social issue (you should only care they forget it, just as quickly) However, it really should not concern the average bitter person. Some are enjoying life, sharing with family, friends, fans, and creepy basement stalkers; Who cares? (The angry person in the basement)

To be deemed shallow from someone, who is judging from an online basis, just shows how little you know what "the real world" is like. The most pretentious/happy/shallow/popular seeming people online, could have the worst situations going on in their lives. The "problem" is how socially inept this generation is. Everyone talks a big game, online... yet cower in person, if you challenge their social-anxiety riddled heads with a real debate. I've seen more than my fair share of red faces and "deer in the headlights" expressions..

If you scroll webpages all day -- And believe you know what people are like, you really need to get out of the dark room and start some REAL conversations.

Thank the police, particular so-called security and surveillance agencies, several religious organizations, and of course some very corrupt governments for this.

They purposely spread very bad and addictive drugs among peaceful and fun-loving people, in order to keep their very greedy grip on power, because they saw us as a threat to them.

They began this heinous scheme in the late 60's and continue to do this today.

How many beautiful lives did they destroy?
