Is it normal to feel threatened by anyone who might be smarter than me?

What I said. Mostly extends to things like academic accomplishment and IQ scores (since I have never been tested myself), but also to other talents, and to a lesser extent whenever someone wants to go into the same line of work as me - I suddenly start viewing them as competition.

I just sort of instantly resent them for being better than me, and wish I could one-up them, although I usually can't.

  • I voted not normal, because I think that's not healthy. Instead you should do what I do, and buddy up to that person because you obviously consider them talented and smart, and don't you want friends like that? Or would you rather have a bunch of halfwit talentless loser friends to make you look better? =P It sounds like a self-esteem issue, no offense. You work on improving your own skills, and don't worry about competing with anyone unless it literally is a competition, as it would be in sports or at work.

I'm very competitive by nature but resenting someone who's better than you? I voted not normal. I know this is sadly so incredibly common, but you should try to rationalize. See the stupidity in resenting someone just cause they're smarter than you.

I come across tons of smarter/better people than me, I get that competitive urge to be better, but simultaneously I admire and respect them. Use your envy of other people as motivation to better yourself, but excise the part that resents them. The ability to do that is in itself is an intelligence

No. That's a terrible way to your life. There will always be someone out there who is better than you in some way. Resentment over something that can't be helped is ridiculous, childish behaviour. That's life. You must learn to get over it.

How are you going to get smarter than me if you don't compete with me to improve your game?

I'm very competitive too by nature and at one point I was top of the class in everything, sports, math, art, you name it. Then I moved on to a bigger setting with triple the amount of people and suddenly I'm not the best. Fact I'm barely above average! At first it kind of bugged me but now I don't really care because I realize that no matter how good you are at anything there will always be that person that is better than you. That doesn't mean you stop trying that just means you try harder..... Just don't kill anyone to get to the top okay.

You sound like a jealous, bitchy little girl. Why don't you grow up?

Naturally, a peacock wants the most vibrant feathers in the flock.

Despite the normality of bestial competition, humans are fortunate enough to have brains capable of overriding biological autonomic responses. Disregard others, be the best person you can be.
