Is it normal to feel that todays youth is less sophisticated then the previous?

It seems like with each new generation, they become less and less sophisticated and well-informed. Todays' youth is so materialistic, uninformed, naive, unorganized, have such high standards, and settle for less. So many kids and teens are high-maintenenced nowadays and always want more electronics, more clothes, more games, and more then what's nescessary. This generation is so artificial, and many of them are so concerned about material things and impressing people, that this kind of trend is actually moving us back in time. What I mean by that is, statistics have shown that with each decade, less and less of the newest generation do well in school as well as job experience, and if things keep going like they are now, we will have less and less educated and experienced people running the country and managing it. Does anyone else feel the same way I do, and is it normal for me to worry and feel like this?

Ugh. I'm so sick of seeing this over and over and over again.

"I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words... When I was young, we were taught to be discreet and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly disrespectful and impatient of restraint."

Our society is being polluted by materialism and desire if you blame teens for being materialistic then you might as well blame capitalism.

Is it normal for this question to make me quite irritated?

'materialistic' - only due to the intense consumerism that is pushed on us. Worth pointing out that the endless adverts asking us to buy stuff, all the pointed media that tells you you must have/buy the next fad is all run by adults from the previous generation.

uninformed, naive - because people assume we don't want to know.

unorganized, have such high standards, and settle for less'. - that is what youth is about. The same as your generation of youth.

You can't blame the youth for the environment they grow up in.

"statistics have shown" - you can use statistics to prove anything, and I have also heard the exact opposite here. Also, I doubt the percentage of people that are dropping out of school will be running the country.

While you feel this way, in parallel-- today's youth feels yesterday's youth is archaic. Now go play with your Atari!

The youth of today will say the same of the youth of tomorrow. When you were a youth, yesterday's youth said it about you.

I'm 17, and I still find this a complete ignorant post.
It stereotypes youths as dumb unsophisticated people.
Frankly, it depends on the person. I see as much "retarded" youths as I see "retarded" adults.
It's not a matter of age or generation, it's a matter of individuality.

The thing is, you only see the unsophisticated youths, but you overlook the smart, bright sophisticated ones.
    And that, is your mistake.

By that, I mean the women who gets on tv talking about happy meals being unhealthy. If you are terrified of happy meals, why do you buy them for your kids?

  • I'm 18 and I feel this way. I hate my generation. My peers treat sex, drugs, alcohol, education, etc. like it's nothing. They have the idea that they should "do them" and "live life", but the way they do it is rather selfish, careless, and disrespectful to themselves. And people wonder why the world is ending...

I say dont worry about it. Who ever said the youths before were sophisticated?

  • Why is it that they always seem to change or be different in ways that are so upsetting the the previous generations?

Too few independent thinkers. Most people just eats what they're told to and don't question what it is. Funny. Probably die first from GMO's. I wouldn't worry about all this for much longer. For the dumb, things aren't going to look good in the future.

Well, yes. Overprotective (dumb) parents & slacker teachers are to blame. For example, my entire class learned to read at the end of kindergarten, now there are kids who are already in 2nd grade and can barely read. A lot of today's parents are too busy b*tching about McDonalds to even notice their kids exist.

You know why we're like that? Because why try if scholarship students wind up in mcdonalds? I generally do good in all of my classes without trying at all, im a slacker and i do good probably cuz im part asian. Todays youth sees no reason to try hard unless they have a motive like everyone else. What do we get if we graduate? a job? Who wants a job, all jobs are boring exept for a few and not everyone can have them.
