Is it normal to feel sad for an online friend?

my online friend from Russia named Nadia, who is 34 years old, told me that she has 2 children, a boy and a girl. She first had a baby daughter with her husband when she was 23. Then she became pregnant again when she was 26 with her husband, and he demanded that she have an abortion when the baby boy was inside her belly. He got mad and left her when she refused to abort, because she wanted to keep the baby, and she has been unmarried for 8 years since then. She told me that she loved her husband but did not have the courage or heart to let go of her baby boy.

Be very, very careful. There are many internet scams, especially coming out of Russia and the Ukraine.
Sad stories can be the precursor to a request for money.

Well, if she asks you for any money don't give her a dime.

        • i had an online friend from Pakistan once who approached me all friendly, but then he made up a totally bogus story that his mother was in the hospital and he was having a tough time and asked me for money, and i blocked him right there.

What you're feeling is empathy, and it's totally normal. And if you consider her a friend and vice versa, she is your friend regardless of distance.

    • I feel her loss although I am a man. I cannot sympathize with her husband at all and he clearly acted very selfishly.

I had a Russian friend online that I felt sorry for... Long story short he is now trying to ruin my life(? Or something like that, I honestly don't know his intentions) with what little information I told him back when I trusted him :/

It's very normal to feel for a friend whether it's an online friend or someone you know in real life.

Online friends are still friends. Even if they aren't there with you, you can still have a very deep, fun, and rewarding relationship.
