Is it normal to feel out of place with people your age?

I am in my mid 20's and feel the most out of place with other 20-somethings. I much prefer the 30+ crowd.

I just feel like I run into a lot of people my age who are extremely self absorbed and can't talk about anything but themselves, brag constantly and are obsessed with trying to impress other people, and they're very hard to talk to. A lot of them tend to be very rude and entitled as well. (Not all of course, but it unfortunately seems to be pretty common). The amount of time I've been blatantly ignored over a cell phone or video games is astounding, and I've hung out with quite a few who had to have everything 100% their way and couldn't have cared less if the rest of the group was having fun or not.

With older people, I feel much more relaxed and like I can have a real conversation that isn't one-sided or bragging. The conversation usually flows so much better and it just seems much calmer and like nobody's trying to impress anybody, they're just trying to have a good time.

  • I think you’re just more mature for your age. To be fair, most people in their 20s are at a stage where they feel they need to impress others.

    • Same here! One of my teachers is still a good friend of mine. I have also always gotten along great and had fun talking to my friends' parents.

As a child, I always liked being around adults over other children, too.
