Is it normal to feel how hot the water is before stepping into the shower?

Every time I am about to take a shower, I close the curtain and stand outside to feel the temperature of the water.

Do most people just get right in and turn the shower on without worrying about the temperature first? Or do most people usually set the right temperature for them and then get in?

Because there are always problems with the heating at work we were given these thermochemical strips which act as thermometers. If it's 16°C or lower, legally we can go home (although we never do). We were given more than we need so I asked if I could have a few for home.

One is stuck to the outside of the window above my bed so I can see the outdoor temperature without even getting out of bed. One is on the bedside cabinet for similar reasons. The third is on the surface of the bath where shower water hits. They update quicker than a mercury or alcohol thermometer. As soon as it turns yellow (25°C), showering commences. Because it's on the floor of the bath, I even avoid cold feet from residual cold water.

    I <3 my thermochemicals!

If it is just a shower, then yes, I test the water to make sure it has warmed up before I get in. However, the house that I live in now only has a shower/tub combo. My technique with that is to step into the tub, turn the faucet handles on (hot first, then cold to make it even), freeze my toes off before the water gets warm enough, then lift the little lever on the end of the spout to make the shower come on.

Sometimes, I forget to push the little lever back down when I get done taking a shower, so when my poor sleepy self steps into the tub in the morning the next day expecting the water to come out the faucet, I get surprise-assaulted by the shower nozzle instead... Damn that makes me angry!

    That's kinda dumb lol.
    Everyones diff.
    Both ways are normal.
And I get in, step to the side and turn it on and keep feeling the water before I step under it.

I think everybody does this! It takes a few min for the temp to even out, and would be MISERABLE to be assaulted by boiling or freezing shower water!

    Always.

I do it too. I thought everyone did. You'd have to be sadomasochistic to subject yourself to freezing water rather than wait a minute before it gets tolerable. But then again some people take cold showers all the time. They actually have toe tester spouts in some showers to feel the temp before getting in. It's mostly in high end homes. The filthy rich don't like wetting their fingers before they get their fingers wet i guess.

Toe testers, really? Wow. I would like to look at a picture of that.

Google image it. I haven't checked but they probably have a pic. I first saw one in high school. I was in an elective architecture class and we went on a field trip to this rich guys mansion to study the architecture. He invented a surge protector for some military application. Anyway, we were touring the house and he took us to the bathroom where he showed off his "toe tester spout" in the ornately tiled shower. You could tell he wanted to impress us. Ha

I searched for it, and came up with one picture. Lol.

I guess if I had one of those, I'd want to show it off too. Were you impressed then?

Is this a serious question? I don't think anybody just cranks the knobs and leaps in..

Is this a serious question. I mean seriously when you do it do you feel abnormal? How could you possibly think this is not normal? The most pointless stories are always approved.

    • I was wondering because you see in a lot of movies that they just go in the shower and turn it on, as if to save them filming time. But I had never asked or knew of anyone else doing what I do, so I asked.

If you think the question is bad, why not just move on and not bother leaving a comment or voting?

I didn't vote and that's not how it works if I have an opinion i'm going to voice it wether you like it or not. You should have put the movie bit into the actual story then it would make more sense to as why you're asking such an obvious question.

        • If you purposely come into topics you don't like to voice your opinion, you are just looking for people to argue with.

Why does a topic have to not be normal to everyone for it to be asked? Some people don't do this, some people get in and turn the shower head away, some stand at the back of the shower. Just because you think its a bad question doesn't mean it is, and no one cares about your useless opinion anyways.

Obviously you care. And I don't come looking for arguments. Like I said I saw your post read it and found it to be a pointless question. That's what's wrong with IIN no one is open to accept criticism and people are to scared to say what they feel and instead they base their comments off of others. I have an opinion i'm going to voice it, and who are you to tell me that I can't just because it's a "negative" opinion. You posted this story publicly so i have the right to say whatever i want about it.
