The first time I put on a condom when I was 15, I unwrapped the condom completely first and tried to pull it over my penis. Don't worry, I was just using it to masturbate so I wouldn't have to clean up and I'm still a virgin, so no worries about STDs or pregnancy. But is it normal for first time condom users to make such mistakes?

Plenty of kids do not get any sex ed, or if they do it's very limited. My HS did not give us ANY sex ed. So unless parents step up and actual talk to their kids, some will never learn properly.
I got sex ed, and they did discuss birth control methods and such. However, I don't recall much details about instructions on how to put on a condom. Either my class didn't go into that detail or as thegypsysailor said, I may not have paid full attention (since I had no interest in a girlfriend at that time and I had a pretty strong "No sex before marriage" stance at that time).
As far as I recall, they didn't go into much detail about how to put it on in my sex ed class. I knew something was wrong the first time I put it on (of course I didn't care because I wasn't going to have sex and just needed a place to contain the mess) and subsequent tries have been more successful.
To tag onto "thegypsysailor" - putting on a condom is often a clumsy thing to do, which is why one should not make their first time to use it the first time they have sex.
In sex ed, or through STD clinics or Planned Parenthood classes/demonstrations, one should practice on inanimate things that somewhat resemble a cock. Once mastered, it's really not much difference between a cock and a banana.
