Is it normal to eat the placenta?

My friends post the strangest things on facebook.

One of my female friends had a baby this week and posted on facebook celebrating by barbequing the placenta on a grill and eating it for the "vitamins". I thought this was a bit odd. Does anybody else do this?

It happens. I am not sure how common it is now but people occasionally do and have for centuries.

My uncle had a Dalmatian bitch that did that.

My cousin ate hers and my friend's sister ate hers. I heard my cousin got bad anxiety after eating hers.. Apparently it's good for a woman after she gives birth as it contains nutrients needed to recover from childbirth but maybe that's just speculation...

I don't like it. But mammals do it, our cows do it, we try and take it off them before they do. But its just nature.

Tom Cruise apparently ate Katie's after she gave birth to Suri.

As far as I am concerned, this is a form of Cannibalism. It's disgusting.

This use to be the norm back when proper nutrition was hard to come by.

Although cooking it seems a strange way to eat it. Standard practice in a modern era is to dehydrate it, and encapsulate it. Take it like a pill.

It is effective in preventing post partum depression and would actually reduce the risk of anxiety, not increase it.
